Lawyer calls for release of policeman murder suspects | New

A habeas corpus petition was filed Friday in St. Catherine’s Parish Court on behalf of two suspects in the murder of Police Sergeant Victor Francis a week ago.

The men’s lawyer told presiding judge Desiree Alleyne that his clients were being held for an unreasonable amount of time while police investigate.

He said the police should charge or release the men.

Following the request, the judge indicated to the investigators that there was an obligation to act against the suspects within a reasonable time.

Police said the investigation was at a critical stage and if the suspects were released the investigation could be hampered.

Police had until September 23 to provide the court with definitive answers about the fate of the men.

Francis was stabbed to death on September 10 at a business establishment in Hamilton Gardens, Portmore, St Catherine.

At the time of his death, he was attached to the Center for the Investigation of Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse (CISOCA).
